Referring to Trial results

perhaps when trial results are referred to there should be a link to PubMed, or a summary of the reference on the Articles page with an upload of the PDF if it is felt to be a significant article

I was just reading a post that mentioned the "ORO trial". Unfortunately that type of reference leaves me none the wiser. There is a link from some of the disease sites to an article list (e.g., H&N, GU). Is it possible for the article reference to be placed here, and possibly the file (PDF) uploaded as has occurred on the H&N site.

Also might it be useful to have the original proposer of an email discussion to write a short synopsis of the case/problem, references and opinions to post of the relevant disease sub-site?

As I have already highlighted the issue of sharing of pdf files is a big concern specially on a public website. We can land up quickly in trouble in this issue. Infact my name and modifications on wikidot are already visible in google :-) .
To circumvent this problem the following solutions can be advised:

Not to post pdf at all - In many situations article PDFs are downloadable free of charge and just giving the URL to the pdf will be suffecient. Infact with google we can just give the title and leave the rest to the search engine itself.

To email pdfs to the required person - the problem remains that the pdfs of concern will not remain in use for other people.

To use a file sharing site like ifile.it - relatively anonymous and simple to use - however too much use will definately bring about heat. My recommendation would be to use this solution with an encrypted archival system - basically a zipped pdf with password. The biggest advantage is files size and number are not a limitation anymore.

To use a social bibliographic software like mendeley (see the button below) , zotero etc. The former i was testing out and has the interesting feature that it allows sharing PDFs. But the granularity of the content sharing is not there.

To keep using the yahoo group to store the pdf with access restricted to members

This one is a idea i thought out recently. Open a gmail account in name of isocentre and use it to store the pdfs. All registered and verified members can subsequently be emailed a discreet id and password for use at this id. The large storage will mean that 1000s of pdfs can be stored with little problem and till date i have seen gmail storage size keeps increasing. To further streamline the process we can use a system of labels and filters to automatically email the pdfs received to all members in the site without lifting a finger or pressing a button.

Please do tell what you all think is a good solution for the site.

Hi everyone
I've noticed that a lot of you are now active on isocentre as coordinators and adding editing pages. As coordinators you have the liberty to design your sitegroup the way you want BUT here are some tips:
1) The homepage of the sitegroup is a page that should guide viewers to other pages with useful content. i.e - don't fill up the homepage with all the content. For example if you are writing about anatomy of a certain region - that should be a separate page and the homepage should have a link to it with a description. such as:
(link) Anatomy of the gall bladder - This page describes the anatomy of the gallbladder and lists online resources for more information.

That will help keep the homepage organized. Otherwise if you put all the information on the homepage it becomes long page that is diffiuclt to use.

2) keep individual pages short - i.e. tackle small topics in each page - anatomy, pathology. staging , radiation, chemo and surgery of gallbladder should be in different pages, with links to each from the homepage. In fact some of these topics can have multiple pages - i.e. radiation can be discussed in the following pages - role of adjuvant RT, primary RT. Rt techniques, GB motion and its impact on RT planning etc etc.

3) You don't have to give comprehensive information on each and every aspect of a particular disease. We are not writing a textbook here. We intend to write about interesting things. So you can write a page on GB motion before you write anything else on the GB. That's what people will read because it's not very easily available. Don't repeat things easily available in textbooks - what's the point? The topics will gradually grow and cover most important things.

4) Write informally - again - this site is not a formal textbook - use informal language, keep your article short and assume basic knowldge. The readers will find it easier.

That's enough for now - thank you and keep up the interest and the effort. I am available for any help.

Indranil

Hi Rohit

Thank you for being so active in the Lung sitegroup.

About the issues you raised:
Need some one else as well as a second co-ordinator or few members to help and keep up with the work.
…Developing the sitegroup will be a gradual process. I am sure there will be more people volunteering once the website is public.

Its quite labour intensive and difficult to edit these pages
… Considering the fact that you get your work online instantly there is no easier way actually. There is a bit of syntax learning reqd and you have to upload image files before you can link to them. That's the way it works unfortunately. Do consider the benfits of being able to eit a webpage in real time anywhere in the world without having to go through any other person.

Wonder how do you get colour to the fonts (no option).
… there is no button for fonts because wikis work primarily on text entry and there is less emphasis on fancy things. You can add colour to fonts using certain syntax statements. My advice is don;t worry about color immediately - that is secondary. I will be posting some basic syntax soon. For now go here:

Wikidot syntax

The other problem is to keep it as original and authentic as possible, coz otherwise, ppl will just say its been copy pasted from the book / website etc.
— this is extremely imprtant. Please do not copy paste. If any material is available online just link to it - don't waste time copying or modifying it and putting it in isocentre - that's a waste of time. If its not freely available online and also copyrighted, you cannot cut-paste or upload that. I will put online some rles regarding this. You can then present your own summary on that topic with references.

The sitegroups section is not meant to be a definitive reference on all aspects of lung cancer. It is meant to be a growing collection of small articles on specific issues. The collection will grow gradually (and slowly). Don't go mad trying to put on everything about lung cancer - it's a waste of time. If you asked me what I would want to see on the lung sitegroup pages this is list of what I would tell you:
a) New staging for lung cancer
b) Does PET change outcomes for NSCLC
c) Should I recommend PCI in NSCLS - what is the evidence?
d) Have protons or SRT achieved first-line status in operable NSCLC? - The evidence so far
e) Elective nodal RT - dead and gone?
f) Targeted therapy in metastsic NSCLC
etc etc. each article should be short and concise 300-1000 words with a short list of references everyone should read.
Your homepage should be a collection of links to these articles arranged in an attractive and organized manner.
Of course this is not a rigid rule and you have the liberty to do things your way - you are the coordinator.
If you need any help in reorganizing pages I'll be glad to help.

For the others:
There will be some redesigning - especially of the main homepage - everything is dynamic here.
I will be uploading some help videos within a few days.
PLEASE PUT ALLL COMMENTS AND SUGGESTIONS ON THE FORUM - DO NOT EMAIL NIKHILESH OR ME PERSONALLY - much easier to deal with - and everyone can see. Do not hesitate to be critical - noone will mind.

Looks of the site: Nice and Sober but the title font could be a bit larger.
Main page:
One potential source of confusion that can arise for a new guy is the sign in link at the top right corner which is the login for the wikidot website.
I would recommend that we add a audio video presentation on how to navigate and add to the website in addition to the written work. I would like to point to www.zotero.org for an example on how useful and intuitive this feature can be.
Overall the site seems easy and intuitive to navigate. However what I would like is the forums link to be moved to the right so as to give a more prominent place to the site groups.
The notice board feature is nice but what I would have liked really is an RSS feed facility as it would mean people need not come back to the website every now and then to keep them selves updated. I notice that this facility is in place for the forums.
One major issue that may arise with the uploading of PDFs etc is the issue of copyright. As long as we were doing it in the relative security of a small group it is ok. Now that all content will be open to the spiders of google I would strongly recommend setting up an alternate method to store and transfer articles. This is one issue on which I think the administrators need to look into.
In the site group section we have to look into the issue of editorial control. Indranil da is well versed in this due to his work in About.com but rest of us are mostly novices in the field of online publication. Poor language and inaccurate statements will mean we will need quite a few moderators in each site group instead of the two. However the issue of site groups really needs to be looked into .. as I dont know how active people will be in this section. I guess this is one part we will know only with experiment.
Coming to certain enhancements that can be added :
1. A proper form to allow people to join the group. Perhaps we can ask for a member vouching system so that forum doesnot start becoming a place for password exchange in the long run.
2. A case discussion form. A standardized case discussion form is absolutely essential. From the looks of it the prime purpose isocentre has served till date is allowing radiation oncologists to interact on a particular case. While maintaining site groups is a very good initiative indeed the maximum thrust of the website should be promoting a dynamic interaction.
The problem with the present day case discussion system is that it is impossible to reference and search. I feel a standardized discussion proforma will improve the quality of discussion and make it available for later searches also.
I feel the forum is a good place to conduct discussions and our database can contain a permanent link to the aforesaid discussion.
One last point I would like to make is regarding archival and backup. Any plans for that.

1. Design a logo for the site
2. There should be a login link ( its OK that you have signin at the Top) . for eg login name ……….., password………., Sign in, sign up…
3. Home page should be modified ( I know its initial phase, but final home page should look good).
a. "What is isocentre?" is ok
b. below that the notice board should come or a scroling window for important announcements such as upcoming meetings,
fellowships or job openings or any important announcement / news
c. How to use this site : all the help regarding using the site and posting rules should be clubbed and posted under one heading and not on the home page
4. Is there any provision to upload Articles/ Seminars?
5. Make a column of useful links with a option of suggest a site or recommend a site. ( can give direct links to NCCN Guidelines, TMH Website, AROI website, Online statistical tools etc.)

i will suggest more changes after complete review of the site
