But if a good number of people evince interest, I am
sure they could have some program organized for benefit of all.

Thats really nice. Infact India should be teaching brachytherapy. As per my understanding we do more cases in India than any other part of the world. The only area where we do not have experience is LDR Prostate Brachytherapy.

The url will help

Nucleotron India has some specific programs for brachytherapy training. I think they are some sort of capsule courses and I chanced on their link.

The contact person seems to be one Ms. Nita (at least she had responded to my email) and her address is nita (at) in dot nucletron dot com {(Substitute at with @ and dot with .) when you copy the email id}

I hope this helps. In case they are holding a training for large number of people in a batch, please keep everyone informed on the forums!

I also hope that interest in Brachytherapy would grow among the members.

i think radiation oncology.. is the best one among the two. as we are dealing with the oncology part of radiation. moreover what i think it should be more precise to be clinical oncology as we are the one who also give chemotherapy these days and take care of all the needs of an cancer patients… except the surgical part.

Hi,
I agree with Santam. SR-ship is a good idea that gives you a more focused atmosphere and possibly different place. I personally have not worked in different institutes in India but I have heard this from my friends, working in different places changes your perspective and helps you grow.
2-3-4 yrs of SRship: No one knows the correct answer to that. It all depends on what one plans to do. All academic institutes need post MD 3 yrs experience with an hope that one publishes some papers in those 3 yrs and shows commitment towards academics. However with growing competition there are many students who may accomplish this within a or two and are confident enough to go out and practice. The other aspect which will drive your decisions is family responsibilities and monetary gains.
Training in India is not uniform: Its not uniform even in West. Each institute has its own advantages and disadvantages.

what is the necessity of a 3 year senior residency?

I think it has all to do with the fact that an AP post at a medical college or a central institute takes 3 years post MD experience

Training in senior residency is again not uniform throughout India, how does that affect the 3 year margin, also doesnt this discrepancy result in overuse of chemotherapy in these training rad oncs??

Yes you are right. Places like TMH with a dedicated RT department and seperate Medical oncology department are probably best in this regard if you are serious about Rad Onc. But face it buddy most will grab the easy money in Mabs and CCT over the technically demanding IMRT anyday.

what senior residency is all about?

having nearly completed 3 years I feel Senior Residency is the time you have to improve yourself in the way you see fit. This is also the time to build up your publication list. Being single minded in thus aspect from the start is of great help. As such Rad Onco in most institutes of India demand little work so there is a danger of you turning lazy and complacent very easily. Keeping your focus on learning new things and publishing ensures success.

Some suggestions for improvement:

Exclusive Rad Onc focussed departments - That is the number one issue. If you dont have chemo patients to care about your focus on Rad onco will ensure greater intake of knowledge

Keeping your focus on publications and publications.

Learn the more effecient way of publishing so that when the day comes and you are in private you dont lag behind as you dont know how to use SPSS or write / critique a paper

Departments - Please upgrade your TPS and machines it is important for all patients as well as doctors. Without good equipment you cant have good radiation oncology. If nothing try for public private partnerships.

Make your own community - criticise , discuss and learn from your peers - often they will know a lot more than your so called doyens and loins of Radiotherapy.

I have been approached by a group providing educational resources who asked if I could come up with topics that would be of educational interest. We do a lot of discussing here and thought that we might be able to come up with some topics off the usual track (you know, the "Radiotherapy for low risk prostate cancer: New perspectives" type of …. YAWN …. thing. Many of our discussions are challenging and 'off-centre'.

I would suggest that any topic in RO-land is OK. If you also have seen or heard enthralling speakers, put their names & presentations in.

USMLE is a must in all states. No short cuts. Some of the USMLE steps are recognized in Canada and other countries. http://www.usmle.org/
Repeat residency is a must for some of the specialties (Radiation Oncology) but not necessary for some (Radiology).
If you are interesting in practicing medicine independently anywhere in Canada. Need to do these exams.
Standard Pathway. http://mcc.ca/en/
I — MCCEE.
II — QE1.
Apply to CaRMS for residency match and if you get through matching process then do residency. CANADIAN GRADUATES WILL BE GIVEN PREFERENCE OVER IMG'S at all levels for obvious reasons.
III — QE 2, that completes LMCC.
Alternatively:
In selected provinces and in special cases one can take up speciality written and oral exams after clearing MCCEE and QE1 and one can start residency in PGY-2 or 3 level pending the assessment by the examiners and the individual program.
Academic route:
For exceptional candidates in special situations each province in Canada can give you an academic license which allows you to practice medicine in a specific university for a specific time period (5yrs) following this time period the performance will be reviewed by the university. This route is used when the province is short of physicians to bring in foreign trained doctors to work.
Fellowships:
None of the fellowship programs are recognized as training by the Royal College, so fellowship is NOT a shortcut to enter the system and bypass the exam process. Even if you do 10 fellowships still Royal College will not give you license unless to do exams and go through the formal assessment process.

Hi Hari
I think its a great idea. Members can post articles in several ways - as a forum post or as a sitegroup article. Members should not wait for others to post articles. It is for each of us to contribute. We all come across articles in our daily reading, in specific searches and as a part of our academic writing. Whenever any of us comes across articles that could be of interest to others - we should not hesitate to post it on the website.

In fact all that is required is to provide a link to the article in Pubmed and tell us why you think the article is important. Don't wait to make things perfect, no one is going to pass remarks. As the Nike slogan does - Just do it. We can all benefit from it. Do not upload pdfs as that is likely to be a copyright violation.

Once we get rid of the inhibition of posting, you can probably see more and more such posts or wiki pages.

Thanks for your replies, if you post your resume no some of the job search engines as Radiotherapist then you will get flurry of emails about "Radiation Therapist" positions across the globe, its quite common for a patient to pose a question saying "are you a doctor" or a "technologists" since they are told by our fellow oncologist to go and meet "Radiotherapist" . This is not a major problem in west however in developing nations Radiation Oncologist are still considered as therapists.
